The fast, friendly service makes it an ideal stop whether you’re grabbing a quick breakfast before exploring Washington Park, as Lindsay Hosseini enjoyed, or settling in with a cold beer and a satisfying Reuben sandwich, like D. Küb. described.
Many patrons appreciate the easygoing vibe and the community-focused spirit of the place. Tom Fernwault calls it a "really cool place to check out," praising both the food and the welcoming staff, while Avan Valenziano highlights the delicious hot food and the extensive deli and wine selections that make it an “awesome food spot in Portland.” Visitors often remark on the lively food hall-style layout, where you order at the counter, pay at a separate register, and wait for your name to be called – adding a casual yet spirited rhythm to the dining experience.
In every bite and throughout the warm, bustling environment, Elephants Delicatessen encapsulates the best of Portland’s food culture: unpretentious, high-quality, and deeply satisfying. Whether you're stopping in for a comforting latte and muffin, indulging in a crispy chicken sandwich, or exploring their fine cheese and wine boards, this spot offers a delightful taste of local flavor with a welcoming heartbeat.
We stopped here for lox and bagel sandwiches before heading into Washington Park for the day. The food was great and service was fast. Loved looking around at all the trinkets and gift shop-type items while we waited.
First time here, really cool place to check out. One recommendation for newbies is maybe have sign up front for directions! Friendly staff and great food! I would highly recommend this place!
Definitely worth a visit just for the atmosphere. Lots of food options and drinks. It's not a typical restaurant where you are seated by a server. You just walk in, look around and order food at the counter. They give you a ticket and you go to a check out counter (different from where you order the food) and pay. Then you just wait and grab your food when your name is called. This would be a good place for a weekend brunch.
Love Elephants Delicatessen!! Delicious hot food, with a wonderful selection of deli items! They have an expansive selection of drinks and locals wines as well. Awesome food spot in Portland!
My wife and I stopped in here and both got turkey Reubens. They were pretty good. Seating was kind of a joke as they were way more customers than tables available but I guess that's not something the restaurant can really change. Was able to sit down and enjoy a beer with my Reuben and had a really nice time
Second time going to Elephants Delicatessen while visiting Portland. Lots of options for good food and the ambiance is great. Friendly people live in Portland and will chat with you which is very cool.
Our first visit to Portland wouldn't have been complete without a stop at one of the iconic Elephants Delicatessens. If this is your first visit, take your time to study the menus at each food station. Don't forget to grab a beverage. We had a ham & cheese sandwich and fish tacos. Both were very good, except that the bread on the sandwich fell apart in pieces as my husband was eating it--not a good sign of really fresh bread.
Worthwhile for sure. A more unique dining experience. Nice gift store inside, full deli, refrigerated prepared foods and meals. For dining in there's a sandwich and soup bar place next to the pizza ( by slice and whole brick oven) and they have a grilled and hot menu with dinner options from burger to chicken enchilada Verde to beef tips etc. You pay cafeteria style and choose which room to sit in . The back is the best because of its cozy fireplace plus peace and quiet. The restrooms are down a big flight of stairs but I think there might have been an elevator but don't quote me on that, just know to check if stairs are an issue for your people that could need the restroom. On the way out we sometimes get a sweet or dessert to go. It's a destination meal for us. I have tomato orange soup and a fresh cheesy bread stick and my son has pizza. We have enjoyed the fries before too. They're 2nd best fries around Oregon my 10 yr old says!
